Real-Life Math

Being a radio producer often means knowing your way around numbers.

"Where it comes in handy is where you're reporting statistics, reporting facts and figures," says Sean Cole. He is a contract reporter, as well as an independent radio producer.

Imagine that you're the producer for a popular radio program in Los Angeles. You get a phone call from the manager of a Santa Monica food bank. The manager says in the first two months of the year, there was a 30 percent increase in the number of people who came to the food bank.

You ask for specifics and she tells you 900 people came to the food bank in January and February. That's up from 600 people during the same period the year before. She suggests that your program should look at some of the reasons for the increase. You say you'll get back to her.

The first thing you do is check her math. Is she right? If she's not right, are you still interested in the story?
