Real-Life Communication -- Solution

The letter might look something like this:

Dear Mr. Smith,

It has come to our attention that some of our viewers are upset about the Fleet 100 court shoe and 500 series cross-trainer advertisements running in the 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. time slot (prime time). There have been over 35 complaints per hour for the last three days. This coincides with the start of your new ad campaign here at WAM-TV.

The complaint is always the same. Where are the female athletes? A recent poll done for us by Pro-Polls Inc. clearly shows our listener base in this crucial time slot as being 55 percent female, aged 19 to 24.

Perhaps it may be beneficial to reconsider the ad campaign. Maybe now is a good time to capture this segment of the sports shoe buying public, rather than offend it.

We at WAM-TV feel our listeners rely on us for good programming. They also look to us for ideas when buying products and services in our community. I would hate to let them down on either matter.

I would be happy to meet to discuss how we can look at some fresh ads that accurately reflect your customer and our viewer.

"Besides being in the communication business, working with and managing people demands highly developed communication skills, both written and verbal. It is the number one activity for me. If I can communicate well, the station will thrive. If I can't, it will suffer," says radio station manager Andy Marlow.
