Real-Life Math -- Solution

Last year you managed to secure two grants for your first dance concert project -- one for $4,600 and another for $3,000. This year you managed to increase that amount by 15 percent. Out of that total, you plan to use 20 percent on costumes.

1. How much more did you raise this year?

Take the total you made last year and multiply it by 15 percent.

$4,600 + $3,000 = $7,600

$7,600 x 0.15 = $1,140 more than last year

2. How much will be spent on costumes?

Add the 15 percent increase to the amount earned last year.

$7,600 + $1,140 = $8,740

Multiply the total by 20 percent.

$8,740 x 20 percent = $1,748spent on costumes
