Real-Life Communication

You are talking to executives of a hydro company. One of the executives believes that hiring an operations research analyst will help boost profits and efficiency at the company.

"You have to stand up and give slide show presentations," says Ross Darrow. He is an operations research analyst. "You need to be able to explain in clear English."

Some of the board members are skeptical. How can you help them?

You give a brief history of operations research:

Operational research (OR) started in Great Britain during the Second World War. It was meant to bring a mathematical approach to military operations.

Since then, OR has become applicable to the management of all aspects of a system, product or service. It is often referred to as systems science or management science. It is now recognized as an important input to decision making.

For many years after the war, OR was associated with problems in industry and government. Modern OR has broadened its interests to include economic, financial, marketing and corporate planning problems. It has had the same success with the inventory and scheduling problems of production.

The OR approach has been used in health services, environmental problems and education. OR applications can be found in the mining, transportation and construction industries. It is also used in banking and in many departments of government.
