Additional Information

A career in industrial or fashion design usually requires a bachelor's degree. Computer-aided design (CAD) courses are a must. Along with the degree, you'll need to prepare a portfolio of your work that shows creative ability.

The industrial design program at the Georgia Institute of Technology focuses on the importance of form, color, proportion and composition in both two- and three-dimensional design. Students solve problems through research, analysis, concept formulation and product development.

Contact the leading companies, suggests Richard DeCost, a designer-researcher who has enjoyed success at five shoe companies. "If a student is interested in getting into the industry, he or she should try writing to many of the leading brands to see if they have any training programs to offer. There's still a need for designers and developers, but the training for these positions is very limited."
