Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution
You recommend that the zoo go ahead with the acquisition of the
panda bears.
After all, as an animal nutritionist, isn't it your job to figure out a
way to feed every type of animal?
After finding that it is also too costly to set up a greenhouse, you work
on creating a biscuit that has the exact same nutritional requirements as
the bamboo. You're excited about the food you create. It looks, feels and
has the same nutritional requirements as a biscuit made out of bamboo.
Unfortunately, when the bears arrive, they won't touch the food.
"We always ask if we can feed an animal something that resembles the food
that they normally eat," says Michelle Shaw, an animal nutritionist at a zoo.
"But there has been no luck with panda bears. We can make a biscuit that
has the exact same nutritional value. It looks perfect on paper, but the pandas
won't eat it."
It looks like it's bamboo or nothing for the panda bears. Either your zoo
will have to come up with the money to purchase shipped bamboo, or the bears
will have to be relocated.
