Real-Life Decision Making

You are at a farm ready to shoe a horse that has been out to pasture for a few months. When the owner leads the horse onto the clean concrete surface, you notice the horse's head bobbing with each step.

You know a lot about horses, and you know that this bobbing can only mean one thing. This horse is lame in one of its front legs. You run your hands down the horse's legs and find nothing wrong. You lift the left foot, and everything looks fine. You lift the right foot and find evidence of an old puncture wound.

"She's been limping for a while now," says the owner. "I've been soaking and putting a disinfectant on the wound and it seems to be fine other than still causing her a bit of pain." She asks you to put a shoe on the horse that will help alleviate the tenderness when the horse walks.

But you're a farrier, not a vet! What do you do?
