Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You recommend that the owner talk to a vet and find out how to help the horse.

But the owner shakes her head. "I've already talked to the vet, and I'm already looking after the horse's hoof," she says. "I called a farrier -- who is supposed to be a hoof and shoe expert -- to create a shoe that will help relieve pain while the horse's hoof heals."

The owner is right. A farrier should be able to make protective and corrective shoes. "If there is an abscess or other injury that is being looked after, we can help with its healing," says Lara Doyle, a farrier.

"Only if the horse's limping is due to poor conformation, then there's nothing we can do," says Doyle. She means that if the horse is built in a certain way that doesn't allow it to walk properly, there is little a farrier can do to help.
