Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You get to work and make a shoe.

You decide to make a shoe that will reduce the tenderness the horse feels when it's walking on the sore hoof. This is the real-life decision that farrier Lara Doyle would make.

"If you see a horse is limping, then you have a look at its hoof and figure out what is causing the problem," she says. "If it's poor shoeing or an abscess that is causing the horse to limp, then you can shoe to help correct the problem."

In this case, a shoe could be tailor made. A leather pad or plate held on by the shoe would protect the underside of the hoof. You could also use a type of shoe called a creased shoe. Normally shoes are pried off, and this can hurt an injured horse. A creased shoe can be removed one nail at a time, which lessens the horse's pain.
