Real-Life Math -- Solution

You are hot shoeing a horse and have 2 different steels to choose from. You want to know the difference between the 2 steels, so you do some calculations:

1.) If type A has 0.2 percent carbon and type B has 2 percent carbon, how much iron does each type have?

Type A:

0.2 percent carbon

100 percent - 0.2 percent = 99.8 percent

Type A is 99.8 percent iron

Type B:

2 percent carbon

100 percent - 2 percent = 98 percent

Type B is 98 percent iron

2.) How much more iron does type A steel have than type B?

Type A = 99.8 percent iron
Type B = 98 percent iron

99.8 percent - 98 percent = 1.8 percent

Type A has 1.8 percent more iron than Type B.

"You have to know your steel to know which type is best for each shoe," says Doyle.
