Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You side with the family and tell him little about the actual procedure.

This is the real-life decision Sharon Paulse, a child life specialist, would have made in a similar situation. "We are really family-centered," she says. "We determine what the family's priorities are, and then try and work with them."

Her decision is also based on talking with Simon. "Everyone has different coping styles," she says. "Some kids want to know everything and see all the equipment used. Some of the more shy children just want to be comforted and not told too much."

In cases such as this, Paulse uses a booklet she has written about surgery, puppets and games to make the child feel at ease in his surroundings.
