Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You agree with your fellow child life specialist and tell him everything.

You believe the child will feel better if he knows everything about his upcoming surgery. "This can work in some cases," says Paulse. "Sometimes a child is afraid of the operating room and so we can schedule a visit or have the doctor come and talk to him about the procedure."

For some children, knowing about a procedure can be calming. But this isn't the case for everyone. Shy and nervous children may not want to know all the details. "Sometimes they don't need to be aware of the details. It's just the same for adults. Some don't want to know," says Paulse.

However, in this situation, Paulse wouldn't have told Simon all the details. "Family decisions are most important and we have to try and respect their wishes."
