Although community organizers must know how to put together a budget, it is not crucial for them to have strong math skills. Community organizing is more about people and issues than numbers. But community organizers must be comfortable with numbers nonetheless.

"At the heart of math skills is problem solving, and at the heart of community organizing is problem solving and critical thinking, so most definitely [math is helpful]," says community organizer Yusef Bunchy Shakur.
