Real-Life Math

Sports officials don't need to be math experts. Yet they do have to do straightforward math calculations in a split second with absolute accuracy. In this job, a math goof can change the outcome of a game and cause an uproar in the stands.

You're a football referee officiating a game between the Vikings and the Cowboys. Minnesota has the ball on their own 28-yard line. Shortly after the play begins, a Viking clips (fouls) a Dallas player on the 23-yard line. This is ordinarily a 15-yard penalty. But when it occurs less than 30 yards from the offending team's goal line it becomes a "1/2-the-distance" foul. Penalty enforcement is based on the spot where the foul happened.

Without using a calculator or writing anything down, determine where the next play will begin. Remember, the game is waiting on you, so you have to calculate this quickly!
