Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You approve Application A because you're confident that the company has done its homework.

The company takes it as a matter of course that they got the patent. Announcements are made in the press and everyone toasts each other with champagne.

However, a few days later your boss calls you. "Why didn't you investigate that application? Don't you know that the other applicant used to work for that big company?"

It turns out that Applicant B came up with the idea while he was working for the multinational company. He couldn't mention that in his application because he signed a non-disclosure agreement when he left the company. But if you'd done your research, you would've discovered that.

Patent examiner Leo Boudreau says decision making is a big part of this job. "Many decisions have to be made during the course of a typical examination: What's new? Is the invention adequately disclosed? Where do I search? When do I end the search? Who do I consult? Should I conduct an interview?"
