You're a bricklayer doing some work on a house. There are several things you have to figure out.

First, the house has a fireplace. You have to determine the minimum allowable size the flue can be. The law requires the flue opening be no less than 1/10th the size of the fireplace opening at the hearth. Designs call for a hearth opening of 30 inches by 27 inches.

How big must the flue be?

Next, you have to figure out how many bricks you're going to need to build the shed in the back. To know this, you'll have to find the area of the walls you are to build. This will be in feet. The bricks you are using are 8/9ths of a square foot.

The shed has a perimeter of 40 feet. The walls will be 12 feet high.

How many bricks will you need?
