Additional Information

It takes many years of education and training to become a neonatologist -- four years in college, four years in medical school, three years in a pediatric residency and an additional subspecialty residency (also called a fellowship) of three years in neonatology.

After completing the residency in pediatrics, students are certified by the American Board of Pediatrics.

All states license physicians. To be licensed, physicians must graduate from an accredited medical school, pass a licensing examination and complete one to seven years of graduate medical education.
