Some of the kids yawn and stretch out for a nap on the lawn.

"Your party's boring," one guest ribs the birthday girl. She is embarrassed by the childish tricks you are performing, and gets up from the grass.

"Forget it, mom! Do we have to watch him or can we do something else?" the birthday girl asks.

The parent looks at you with a concerned expression and wonders why you aren't trying harder. "If you can't amuse them, you might as well pack your bags and we'll do something else," she says. "I just want the kids to have fun."

"You've got to think on your feet," says Levene. "If the audience isn't what you're expecting or they're not reacting the way you think they should, you've got to abandon your act and try something else. Every audience is different."
