Industrial hygiene is a science. Like all sciences, it relies heavily on math.

For example, dust is usually harmless. That is, if you're not breathing too much of it. But how much is too much? According to Kathy Smolynec, an industrial hygienist for a railway company, 10 mg per cubic meter of air is too much dust.

She explains that finding out the concentration of dust and other contaminants is done with highly technical machines that draw a predetermined number of cubic meters of air through a specially designed filter. Then the filter is removed and samples are taken off it for study and measurement.

OK, Smolynec concedes, air samples are taken with a very fancy vacuum. Nevertheless, it's the best way to get air samples.

You're an industrial hygienist sent to a factory to find out if the workers are breathing too much dust. You pack your fancy vacuum and filters and head to the plant.

At the site, you collect 8 samples of air of 1 cubic meter each. You take the filters and measure the dust on them. Here are your results:
