Real-Life Communication
Every day, computer game designers spend hours in front of their
computer screens. Their job is to dream up the most exciting and technologically
advanced games possible.
Every game you play is the product of a design
team, made up of designers and programmers. It may take the team a year or
more to "move" the product from the design stage to the store. The team members
have to work very closely with each other so that each part of the game meshes
with all of the other parts. This process gives the game the overall feel
the team desires.
Throughout this long process, designers are always
coming up with new ideas, or different ways of doing things. Often, they meet
with senior company personnel to present their new concepts. Then the ideas
are discussed and approved.
"The internal design review team would
make a decision on the merits of the game and then move forward," says Keith
Dundas. He works with a computer game company.
Game designers and programmers
must be able to inform the company's internal design review team of the benefits
of a particular game. Then, they must persuade the review team to consider
the development of the product. They must "sell" the game's merits in both
formal and informal settings.
You're a computer game designer, and
you're working on a team that has designed a new and exciting computer game.
It's called Hockey Heaven, and it's scheduled to be released within the month.
The
company's internal design review team is composed of senior designers and
programmers. They're anxious to know about this new game. Your design team's
leader, called the producer, has asked you to prepare a speech outlining the
game's merits.
"A producer is responsible for everything that goes
into a game, for the look and the feel of the game, and everybody reports
to the producer," explains Dundas.
"This includes the music team, sound-effects
team, animation team, graphic design team, animators, programmers and anyone
else. The producer would take the game and pitch it to an internal review
board. [A game is] a collective effort, but somebody has to be responsible
for it. We call that person a producer."
Prepare a speech using some
of the information provided below. The goal of your speech is to inform and
persuade the review team of the merits of your team's exciting new game.
