Real-Life Communication

A big part of a scriptwriter's time is taken up with pitching ideas to producers. You will normally have several meetings before you get a contract. You have to get them excited about your ideas.

A first-time pitch is normally done in person and without notes. You've written your pitch prior to the meeting and memorized it. Pitches are best when they're short but enthusiastic. You need to paint a picture in the listener's mind.

Sometimes you pitch a script you've already written. Often, you just have the idea and maybe an outline of the plot.

Pitching a script is a lot like describing a movie you liked to a friend. Think of a movie you've seen that you really liked. Pretend the story is your idea, and you're pitching the movie script to a producer.

Be brief, just mentioning the highlights, but make it clear why people are going to line up around the block to see it. If you've seen the movie Titanic, it might be a good one to try.
