Real-Life Math -- Solution

  1. How much money are you going to request?

    Money = 700 + (1,200 x 0.25) + 1,200 + 3,000 + 3,000 + 500
    Money = 700 + 300 + 1,200 + 3,000 + 3,000 + 500
    Money = $8,700

    You're going to request $8,700.

  2. If you add 15 percent for contingencies, what will be the total?

    $8,700 x 1.15 = $10,005

    If you add 15 percent, the total will be $10,005.

Working with budgets is just one way scriptwriters use math skills. "You need to know how to do budgets because sometimes you make your proposal a budget proposal for a project," says scriptwriter Scott Reid.

He says knowing how to use a computer spreadsheet program is valuable. A spreadsheet program can aid in designing the original budget proposal, as well as down the road. "If they end up giving you the money, you'll have to present them with cost reports," Reid says.

Most scriptwriters are freelancers. They use math skills to keep track of all their income and expenses, just like any other businessperson. "You have to know how to balance your books and you've got to know how to invoice," says Reid.
