Real-Life Math -- Solution

You're a greeting card designer and you're trying to find out how much profit you made from one design.

You received $400 for the design. You also receive five percent of the wholesale sales from the card. Your card wholesales at $1.50 per card. The wholesaler sold 2,500 cards each month for six months.

Now add it all together.

2500 cards x 6 months = 15,000 cards
15,000 cards x $1.50 per card = $22,500
5 (percent) /100 x $22,500 = $1,125
$1,125 + $400 = $1,525.

You have made $1,525 from your design in six months.

"If something sells well, they [manufacturers] keep doing it," says greeting card designer Ian Challis. Some of his designs from 2010 and 2011 are still selling. But some last less than a year..
