Real-Life Math -- Solution

You are a zookeeper feeding a herd of zebras. You want to calculate their weekly intake of food correctly so that you only have to make one trip to the zebra pen.

How many bags of oats will you take to the barn for 7 days?

Each zebra gets 1.5 pounds of oats per day.
18 zebras x 1.5 pounds of oats = 27 pounds of oats needed per day

For 7 days:
7 x 27 pounds = 189 pounds

How many bags is this?
189 pounds / 50 pounds per bag = 3.78 bags

You will need to take over 4 bags of oats.

How many bales of hay will you take?

Each zebra eats 2 flakes of hay per day.
18 zebras x 2 = 36 flakes

12 flakes per bale:
36 / 12 = 3 bales

The zebras eat 3 bales of hay per day.
3 bales x 7 days = 21

You will need to take 21 bales of hay over to the zebra shed.
