Real-Life Communication

Every day, small villages and native people are being integrated into modern life. Their ways of life are being forgotten because many of the cultures do not keep written records. Their histories are kept alive in the stories and memories of their elders.

Ethnobotanists research the different varieties of plants that each culture uses or has used. They talk to a variety of people in a certain culture. Then they examine their findings to determine patterns of usage.

Ethnobotanists must write reports for the company or organization that commissioned the study. They must also write articles for professional journals.

Reports and shorter summaries must also be written to help the average person understand the uses and advantages of some plants and herbal remedies. These might appear in magazines at the grocery store or in the pages of books on natural healing and nutrition. They are written in clear, simple language to help average person understand them.

Read the information below. Then write a simple explanation of it.

Ginseng is used in the root form. It can be found in capsules, tablets and teas. It is widely recognized as an energy booster, stress reducer and memory enhancer. It is also thought to boost immunity.

Mongol emperors used ginseng 4,000 years ago. Its name is derived from the Chinese for "man-root" because the fleshy, white roots often have a human shape. However, scientific studies have failed to prove that ginseng has a significant effect as an energy booster. There is also a great difference in the concentration of active ingredients found in wild ginseng, which is more potent, versus cultivated ginseng.
