Real-Life Communication -- Solution

Here's what we came up with:

Dear Mr. James Markus:

Attached, please find the file that includes the next two-year country plan for the demining effort in Turkey. It includes all the details as to what it will take to run the demining program. Here is an at-a-glance breakdown of the information contained in this report:

Use of Funds

The total budget for this two-year plan is $12 million. That sum will be divided accordingly:

  • 20 percent will be spent on administrative costs
  • 20 percent will be spent on labor costs
  • 20 percent will be spent on equipment costs
  • 40 percent will be spent for survivor benefits

All of these figures fall within the guidelines for the programs.

Use of Labor

The cost of labor outlined in the two-year country plan will cover the employment of 15 deminers for a period of 18 months. During those 18 months, each deminer will be responsible for training five natives in the procedures for detecting and deactivating anti-personnel mines.

Contacts for Program

Arrangements have been made through the American consulate in Turkey with the Turkish government. We have been assured we will have their full support and cooperation.

I hope that you will find this plan meets with the standards necessary to set this program in motion. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me to discuss the matter further.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

"Written communications are critical in my career," says Jane Brouillette. She is a deminer currently working in the Republic of Yemen.

"For countries to make decisions which they support, they need information developed at multiple levels. As technology shifts to Internet, we are forced to write more and speak less due to the difference in costs. As e-mail cannot communicate feelings, we have to improve our written communication to enable those removed from the situation to understand."
