Real-Life Math -- Solution

Having a budget that is well balanced is essential to demining programs. So, to get your labor costs in line, it is first necessary to determine the projected costs of that labor. To do that, you first need to figure how much you will be paying for labor each month.

Labor = 15 deminers x $10,000 per deminer per month x 18 months
Labor = $2.7 million

Your total labor cost is $2.7 million.

Now, to figure your percentage of labor cost, you need to divide the total labor cost by the amount of your overall budget.

Labor cost percentage = ($2.7 million / $12 million) x 100

Labor cost percentage = 22.5

Your total labor cost is 22.5 percent, making it too high to fit within your budgetary constraints. That means you will either have to pay your deminers less or hire fewer deminers.

"Mathematics is essential in my work on a daily basis," says Jane Brouillette. She is a deminer. "Math is critical for budgets, measuring for equipment in the referral structure and statistics."
