Real-Life Communication

Search and rescue coordinators need to be good communicators. Most of the job consists of educating the public so people will never need their services.

Topics you might speak about include avalanche safety and backcountry hiking tips. If people follow safety guidelines, they can avoid getting lost or suffering injuries.

You're talking to a group of high school students about safety in the mountains. You've already discussed avalanche safety. Now, you'll give them tips about hiking in the mountains. The points you want to mention are:

  • Before a hike, research the trail. Find out the distance and level of difficulty.
  • Don't hike alone.
  • Leave a note in your car's glove compartment, or tell a friend where you're going and when you'll finish.
  • Stick to your agenda.
  • Take warm clothing, rain gear or a tarp, matches, and extra water.
  • Make sure you're back before dark.

Write down what you'll say to the students. Make it conversational. Students don't like to be lectured to.
