Real-Life Math

You have been hired by a company to analyze handwriting samples of their employees as a part of a major restructuring plan.

Before you begin the work, you hammer out a contract with the employer. "This is like any other small business," says Elaine Charal, a graphologist. "You have to market yourself and you have to manage your business."

Part of that management means looking after the finances. How much do you charge per session? Does it matter if it's for business or personal use? Do you offer discounts for larger contracts?

"You can get paid per report or per analysis," says Charal. "But it's important to know that you can't just start analyzing. You need to consider how you're going to run your business."

You decide that because you will be doing a large number of analyses, you will offer a discount.

  • You charge $95 per analysis for business use.
  • If more than 20 analyses are requested, the rate drops to $90 per analysis.
  • If more than 50 analyses are requested, the rate drops by an additional 5 percent.

If the company has 65 profiles it wants done, how much will you charge per analysis? And what will your total bill be?
