Real-Life Math

You've heard about a woodcarver who has won awards for his decoys. Hunters use his lifelike ducks with great success.

You think Woodcarving World magazine would love a profile of him. You find out they pay $1.25 a word for stories. You think your article will be 3,000 words long.

Like most magazines, Woodcarving World allows you to bill an extra 10 percent of your article fee for expenses.

  • You'll have to drive 450 miles round trip to where the woodcarver lives. The magazine pays 20 cents per mile.
  • You'll have to spend 2 nights in a hotel, at a rate of $60 per night.
  • Your daily expenses, such as food and phone calls, will total $40. You'll be there for 3 days.
  1. How much will you be paid for the article (not including expenses)?
  2. What is the total of your expenses? Is it within 10 percent of your article fee?
