Students must graduate from an accredited nursing school and pass a national licensing examination to obtain a nursing license.

They may be licensed in more than one state, either by examination or endorsement by another state. Licenses must be renewed periodically, and some states require continuing education for renewal.

Specialized training is required for emergency nurses. The Emergency Nurses Association offers certification courses to show competency.

"I suggest that interested students spend some time in an ER as a volunteer or observer, especially on weekends during the evening or night shift," says Gina Docherty. She is an ER and trauma nurse. "This will give you an idea of what ER nurses do and if you'd like this type of job."

"You have to be a very caring person," says emergency room nurse Mary Ann Bish. "You'll need a lot of compassion."
