Real-Life Math

The world is undergoing an agricultural revolution. Biotechnology is already bringing new and rapid advances to farming. With the aid of biotechnology, farmers can look forward to more efficient crop and livestock production. New and cheaper technology is especially critical for developing nations struggling to feed growing populations.

You work for a biotechnology company that produces new seed and plant varieties. It's your job to figure out what markets would be best suited for the product. You have a growth rate chart for a developing country showing how much food they produced as compared with how much they needed to be self-sufficient. If your biotechnologists could produce hardier seeds, grains and plants, you might be able to tap the market.

Use the chart to figure out what type of food they'll need most urgently in the future. Then your biotechnologists can concentrate their research efforts.

  1. Which crop does the country most need to increase production of in terms of percentage? Hint: figure out how many percentage points more of the product were needed than were produced.
  2. In terms of sheer volume, what crop do these people need more of?
  3. Are they producing enough of any crop to feed their people?
