Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You tell your candidate to attack Thorton on his education policy.

This is the real-life decision that Holly Schoenke would make. Schoenke is the executive director of the American Association of Political Consultants.

"As a political consultant, you have to make split-second decisions about what the candidate says, what voters he talks to, whether he should talk to these voters instead of other voters," she says.

"You have to figure out whether it's a good idea for your candidate to walk into a hostile environment or not."

In this instance, you want to deflect the negative attention from James to Thorton. By quickly explaining her situation, and then turning on Thorton's policy, James should be able to turn the tables.

"A political consultant wants their candidate to win," says Schoenke. "If the campaign is going well, it should be like a wheel turning with each issue."
