Real-Life Math

You have recently been hired as a swine technician at a large pork production farm. The barn manager tells you that your first task is to complete some computer records that show when a group of sows will give birth.

When the sows have been weaned (that is, they are no longer nursing piglets) they go into heat (that means they are ready for breeding) five days later. Once bred, the gestation period (the length of time they are pregnant before giving birth, or farrowing) is 115 days. One week before their due date, they are moved into a special room with heat lamps and other equipment.

The group of sows were weaned on May 1.

  1. When will they be bred?
  2. When will they farrow?
  3. When must they be moved into the birthing room?
