Real-Life Communication -- Solution

Statement number one is poor. Your remark about Peter's complaining will make the situation worse between you and Peter. It does not open the door for any meaningful communication.

Statement number two is better, but it is still not good. You have made it clear that you are doing your job ethically, but you show no personal enthusiasm for Peter's work. The situation between you and Peter is not likely to improve significantly.

Statement number three is best. You acknowledge the difficulties without blaming anyone, and you express your wholehearted support for Peter's right to the award. This communication opens the door for a better understanding between the two of you.

"If there are personality conflicts, you must be able to talk to your management team about the person's abilities, as well as be able to communicate with the person involved," says Kevin Swallow, a cereal chemist. "In this case, you have to decide between not recommending the person, making a qualified recommendation or recommending them wholeheartedly. The last is the only correct choice."
