Review the film and do your best to be objective

This seems reasonable. After all, you're trained to review each film on its own merits. But it's hard to know how your previous relationship with the actor will affect your view of the film.

After you submit your review, your editor learns about your relationship with the lead actor. She is angry. "You should have disclosed this to me," she says. "I would have had another reviewer review this film!"

Freelance film reviewer Dan Kois says he "would probably be fired" if he didn't reveal to his editor that he knew someone closely involved in a film that he reviewed.
