Real-Life Math -- Solution

First, you calculate the amount you will charge for intelligence tests.

12 x $350 = $4,200

Next, you calculate the amount to charge the prosecutor for pre-trial preparation.

20 x $80 = $1,600

Finally, you calculate what you will earn from your two court appearances.

10 x $50 = $500

Now you can find out your earnings for the month.

$4,200 + $1,600 + $500 = $6,300

Your total earnings for the month are $6,300. That sounds like a large amount, but you still have to pay rent on your office and other expenses. Still, you're off to a good start!

Forensic psychologist Len Diamond says he doesn't normally use math skills when working with patients. However, a knowledge of basic math makes it easier to run a successful practice.

"Being a forensic psychologist is just like owning a grocery store, running a computer business, or any other small business operation," he says. "I need to know how to maintain good financial records. In order to ensure that I will be successful in my business, these activities require good math awareness."
