Real-Life Decision Making

You're a child-care worker in a summer program offered by your community. Part of your job involves taking small groups of children on outings.

Today, you and five 12-year-olds are on your way to an outdoor jazz festival. It's a nice day and you figure the kids will really enjoy it. There is one child who obviously doesn't want to be here, but you're hoping she might start to enjoy herself as the day goes on.

You get to the jazz festival and everyone seems to be having a good time, except for her. An hour or so later, you see her talking to a woman who looks like she could be about 20 or so.

She comes over with the woman, who she introduces as her aunt. The girl says she and her aunt are going to take off for the day. She says her mom told her she could meet her aunt here.

You didn't hear from the parent on this one, so you're skeptical. The aunt tells you she spoke to the girl's parents this morning and everything is OK.

The girl obviously wants to go and isn't having a good time. Besides, she's only got another couple of hours till she has to go home anyway.

"I have to say it -- this kid was a brat and she really didn't want to be there," says Sandy Josephson, a child-care worker who faced exactly this situation.

What are you going to do?
