"To enter this field, a person needs good people skills," says Jose Quirino. He is a meter reader.

Safety is an issue for the customer as well as the meter reader. Some people can be uncomfortable having a stranger come into their yard, let alone their home. But the location of some meters may require that.

"Some situations arise from not being immediately identified as the meter reader," says meter reader Mark Willis. Some meter readers don't wear uniforms, although many do. "These [situations] are easily resolved with a quick statement of the facts. Only rarely will ID or more be actually requested."

Here are some ways you can make a customer feel comfortable with your presence:

  • Always wear your uniform if you have one.
  • Wear your identification so it is visible to the customer.
  • Introduce yourself on your first visit to a new customer.
  • Explain your reading schedule so the customer will know when to expect you and adjust your schedule if possible if it would help the customer.
  • Refer the customer to the company's customer service department if they have concerns you can't answer.
  • Offer to come back another time if the customer has a serious concern with your presence and check with your supervisor before returning.
  • Be friendly.

You have a customer who is clearly uncomfortable with your presence. You seem to startle her when you run into her out in her yard around lunchtime each time you visit. What could you do or change, using the list above, to make her feel more at ease?

You could:

  • Be friendly.
  • Explain your schedule and offer to come to her house to do the reading at a time of day that is more convenient for her (when she isn't working in her yard).
  • Suggest that she contact the customer service department at the company if she has any questions about her utility service and the need for meter readings.

How would you say it?
