One of the biggest safety issues for meter readers is encounters with animals, usually dogs.

Bryan Hipley is a meter reader. "Learn your dogs," he says. "Learning their breeds, tendencies and behaviors will help you to read them. Understanding what a dog is telling you through its behavior could keep you from getting bitten.

"Never turn your back on a dog, even if you think you know it. Something may have happened to the dog since you last saw it. Maybe it was abused or horribly frightened. Maybe it was sprayed with pepper spray by someone dressed in a uniform similar to yours. Anything could have happened since you read that meter last month. This time, the dog might not be so friendly."

You are a meter reader. On this particular job, you have a Doberman growling against your leg. There is no one else around. Even slight movements make the dog very jumpy.

What do you do?
