You are working as an operator of a grain elevator. You are responsible for buying grain from the farmers when they bring it in. The deals you offer are laid out for you in a rule book and set of guidelines that your employer has provided for you.

However, your employer has told you that you do not always need to stick closely to the rule book. "I want you to use common sense and reason things out," he says.

"If you can't give a farmer exactly what he asks for, don't just tell him no and send him away. I want you to sit down with him and explain all our programs and options. You should try to come up with an alternative that will be good for the farmer and good for us."

Today, a farmer named Mr. Jones brings in a truckload of grain that he is hoping to sell you. He tells you the price that he wants to be paid and the deal that he is hoping to make. Looking at the guideline book, you see that you cannot meet the price that he asked for.
