Grain Elevator Operator

Real-Life Activities

Real-Life Math

You are working as a grain elevator operator. One of your responsibilities is to test the grains for moisture. Moist grain is at risk of developing diseases or of being infested with pests.

You currently have 4 containers of grain. The first container has tested at 16 percent moisture. The second container has tested at 12 percent moisture. The third container tests at 14.5 percent moisture, and the last container tests at 11.25 percent.

A boxcar is ready to be loaded. You must make sure that the total moisture level for the grain to be loaded in the car will not exceed 14 percent.

What is the combined moisture reading for your grain? Can you load the car?
