Real-Life Math -- Solution

You have 4 containers of grain. You have to calculate the total percentage of moisture.

Your combined moisture level is:

Moisture = (16 + 12 + 14.5 + 11.25) / 4
Moisture = 53.75 / 4
Moisture = 13.43 percent

Since the combined moisture is less than 14 percent, you can load the 4 containers of grain in the boxcar.

"You are using basic mathematics constantly," said Byron Ulery. He is president and CEO of a grain co-op. "For example, you have to ensure that the combined moisture readings of grains must not exceed 14 percent when you are loading a boxcar."
