Real-Life Communication

People tend to think of computers as being really smart, but they are only as clever as the people who program them.

A computer service and repair technician begins with the assumption that the computer knows absolutely nothing about what it's being told. Programming a computer is a lot like explaining something to a very young child. The explanation must be clear, covering every step of what you want done. It becomes even trickier if you are directing someone else to do the work.

"Communication skills are extremely important," says computer technician Sue Fanning. "You need to be able to convey directions via telephone as well as in person when supporting applications, or asking questions to troubleshoot technical problems."

These precise communication skills are not as easy as they may sound. Try out your programming skills by explaining a simple procedure -- opening a door -- as though you were telling someone who had never done it or seen it done before.
