Real-Life Communication -- Solution

This is a typical scenario for many school psychologists, says Tim Hartshorne. He is a psychology professor. Hartshorne remembers dealing with a parent in a similar situation. He says she was upset because she really didn't understand what was going on.

"Parents naturally become upset," says Hartshorne, and schools often go on the defensive. However, he adds, parents can be easy to work with if school psychologists take the time to listen to what their concerns are.

Here are some questions you could ask Mrs. Holmes:

  1. What are your concerns regarding your daughter?
  2. What did you and your daughter's teacher discuss?
  3. Would you like me to explain what the potential problems are?
  4. Is there anything you might like to tell me about your daughter's behavior at home?

Be sure to listen carefully to what Mrs. Holmes is telling you. And don't hesitate to ask more questions if you need more information.

Take the time to explain what you think the problem might be. If you don't know or don't want to venture a guess, explain how you can assess her daughter and determine exactly what the problem is. If Mrs. Holmes understands what you're saying, chances are she'll be much easier to deal with.

"Good communication skills can eliminate a standoff," says Hartshorne. And that means being able to listen well.
