Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You refuse to work on the job.

This is the decision many computer engineers would make, says Wayne Loucks. He's a professor of computer engineering.

Loucks says engineers often know what they're getting into when they accept a job with a particular company. But not always.

"If you're going to work for one of the fighter plane manufacturers, there's probably a good chance that you're going to be involved in weapons research, so you sort of knew that when you took the job," says Loucks. "But it's also true that you may work for some little company. And what are you going to do if you work for a company that makes software and one of the clients is [in the defense industry]? Are you going to have a hang-up at that point?"

Dealing with ethical dilemmas is just part of being an engineer, adds Loucks. In some situations the right choice is clear, he says. At other times, it's much subtler.
