Real-Life Decision Making

You have a patient who was referred to you because he was coughing up blood. He is a heavy smoker.

You do a lung X-ray and find it shows a dark spot on the lung.

You can't tell from the X-ray exactly what you're dealing with. It could be a tumor, but then again it could be a simple abnormality.

You're concerned about this patient, but don't want to panic him and send him into the hospital unnecessarily. At the same time, it's your job to interpret the X-ray and tell the patient what's wrong.

The patient wants to know the results of his X-ray. You're not sure what to tell him. What do you do?
