Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

Don't color her hair

You are working at a small salon and a client comes to you for a hair color. You try to find the neutral brown color she wants, but you are out of stock. You know that mixing red and green will give you a neutral color. You also know that one color may be more potent. Her grey roots could become red or green.

The salon owner tells you to go for it and perform the service. You decide to go against her advice and go with your instincts. You explain the risks of mixing colors to the client. You take time to explain the situation, and you are apologetic. You leave the final decision up to the client, but advise her against taking the risk. She takes your advice and you do not color her hair.

You can tell the salon owner is not too happy with you, but you feel like you did the right thing.

"As a cosmetologist I think it is good to listen to others, but in the end you should go with your gut instinct because you are the one who has to calm down the unhappy client," says Kristin Ploof. She is a cosmetologist in Rochester, New York.
