Additional Information

The route to becoming a neurosurgeon can be long: four years of undergraduate school, four years of medical school, and three to eight years in an internship and residency, depending on the specialty selected. A few medical schools offer a combined undergraduate and medical school program that lasts six years, instead of the customary eight years.

Dr. Andrea Halliday suggests that interested students think about visiting with doctors or going to the hospital on career days. "Try to come to the hospital, follow doctors around and maybe even observe an operation," she says.
