"You absolutely need communication skills," says Chris Kowal, a 3D renderer and designer in Vancouver. "You're not just going to sit behind a computer.

"A lot of the time, and I'm sometimes very guilty of this, the client just doesn't understand [what you're trying to do]," says Kowal.

"If you don't give them the tools to understand what they're looking at and why they should be excited, then they're not going to be excited and they're going to go for something else. Part of it is selling your idea that you want to communicate."
